quotes
"On neighbouring Pemba Island, with its world-class diving, big-game fishing and significant fashion input from British designer Ellis Flyte, Fundu Lagoon is Africa at its eco-chic zenith, with 20 tented lodges, net-swathed beds and a general manager who was liberated from London's Groucho Club." Observer 05

"More upscale is Fundu Lagoon, on the west coast of Pemba (the island north of Zanzibar). All 14 of the spacious thatched-roof rooms have views of the sea, but the beach suiteaEURwith its private deck and plunge poolaEURis by far the most luxurious. Guests gather for evening cocktails at the Jetty Bar, located on a pier that juts out into the Indian Ocean." Travel+Leisure 04

"Just saying "Zanzibar" is sexy; there's something about the way those z's roll off the tongue. A stay on the edge of the Indian Ocean can multiply the effect, especially when you're cosseted in a suite on the beach or up in the hills. Built on stilts and connected by boardwalks, the 20 tented bungalows exude eco-chic comfort, with coconut-wood chairs and the beds swathed in mosquito netting. The stretch of sand that the resort occupies is the farthest you could be from civilization and still have running water." Travel+Leisure 03

"[Nothing] prepared me for the hidden beauty of Fundu Lagoon; it sneaks up on you as you speed across the bay, gradually peaking from out of the jungle. It is effortless and luxurious in a barefoot, sensual way. Swahili cuisine (a tangy mixture of African, Arab and Indian ingredients) is of a similar standard all along the coast; but the food at Fundu is good. I sink what might rate as the best bloody mary of all time and sleep, dreaming of the white sands and blue seas that greeted me." Guardian 02

"As you'd expect, the resort is stylish. Rooms are a safari-on- the-beach affair; dark-green tents under thatched roofs. It's rustic yet luxurious, blending into the vegetation, the main areas linked by wooden walkways. There's miles of white beach and not a lot else apart from watersports: snorkelling, waterskiing, fishing, sailing and kayaking. The resort isin one of the top Indian Ocean diving locations, and has a PADI diving centre.
...
There are 20 tent rooms on stilts, 10 on the hillside and 10 on the beach. We had number 10. Steps led up to a wooden verandah with deckchairs and a view across the bay. Inside the furniture was made of coconut wood with a large wooden bed slung with mosquito netting. The bathrooms are wood-panelled with slatted showers.
...there's a satellite TV room tucked away for those who can't switch off, and a telephone at reception." Independent 02

There is an open-sided restaurant offering international cuisine along with three bars. Go to the Main Bar to be social before and after meals, the Jetty Bar to have a comfortable drink halfway out over the ocean, and the Pool Bar to lounge.

Fundu Lagoon

"A cluster of fourteen luxury tents, tranquil, secluded and only accessible by boat, Fundu Lagoon does eco-chic with serious style."

This is a stylish and smart beach location with fantastic accommodation under canvas, all set against a backdrop of a steep forested hillside. Fundu Lagoon fills a niche for top quality accommodation and food in an upmarket but environmentally sympathetic style. The rooms have very private huge safari tents under makuti and are in either a beachside or a hilltop position. They are decked out with hand finished chunky wooden dA©cor and teak floors and connected with aEUR˜nature-trail' style rustic wooden rope-banister walkways.

The open restaurant and bar at its centre inspires a sense of the height of casual elegance, all billowing white nets and makuti filled with a fine aroma of fresh coffee. Here guests enjoy a sumptuous international menu, with great attention to detail, while enjoying views of the beach and sea. Staff are immaculately dressed and friendly, and there is an overall sense that the place will be well-run and guests' needs attended.

Near to the conscientiously stocked designer gift shop and reception the hotel has a sudden and surprising atmosphere of a more glitzy big hotel. From here guests look out over the long wooden jetty and dark, golden beach, and watch Pemba fishermen passing back and forth and docking their hand crafted vessels to unload the catch of the day. Fundu Lagoon has a fleet of more modern boats for diving, snorkelling and watersports, and a fine catamaran takes guests out for the full day sailing and sunset cruises. Charters can also be arranged to Zanzibar and Stone Town.
